THE
COSMIC JUSTICE OF KARMA |
| Once I shot a poacher dead as a part of my ‘duty’ as forest officer. I was congratulated for having got rid of a ‘notorious poacher’ and even got away with my action for 20 years, until one night the ‘hauntings’ began. The dead man’s ‘face’ followed me through various jobs. Finally, I spent a month in Whitefield with Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. I attended Darshan and Nagarasankirtan, and played the dholak at the Thursday bhajan sessions. | |

In one of His discourses, Baba has said that all those who come to Him are not cured of their incurable diseases. He says, "It is their past karmas and intensity of faith in Swami’s healing powers that are the two major factors for their recovery or otherwise. Sai knows the past, present and future of everyone. He is fully aware of the past karmas of everyone and intervenes only in cases where the individual has sufficiently atoned for his past sins." Difficult circumstances which make us suffer, defying all our efforts to relent their inexorable hold on us, are similarly, the result of transgressions of the moral code in previous or present birth(s). When Baba says ‘sufficiently atone’, it is He who decides what is meant by ‘sufficient’. The problem begins when we begin to presume what is sufficient. Baba has elsewhere said that those who are instrumental in wrongs of any kind will have to pay the price. Even should someone take it to great lengths to justify the wrongdoing, there is no escape from the laws of Karma.... Jagadish Prasad, journalist |
